Humor is something that I embrace everyday and it has helped build the community around me. While I struggle in serious scenarios, I am realizing that being serious does not renounce humor, and they are not mutually exclusive. Humor can be serious, and we can convey serious topics through humor, using it as a tool of escape, but more importantly as a call for change and redemption. The use of humor can communicate resistance in times of censorship, create a sense of control during threatening situations, and allow for the disarming of the oppressor and uniting of the oppressed. The No Kings and ICE Protests helped bring these ideas of power in humor to the forefront, as people promoted their beliefs through signs and costumes that were joyous when they, and their community, face so much injustice. The cut out and signs are callbacks to past protests, and an object that continues the demand for change inviting the viewer to step into the rubber chicken feet, acting as an invitation of inclusion.
