Wallets are a gathering point for our legal documents and personal items that we often choose to keep private. These items are intimate because of the access they grant us for future opportunities and the material world, and allowing others to access these documents could be perilous. The act of exhibiting the ID photos in a public space along with the ability to flip through someone’s manipulated cards in a booklet format feels like an encroachment on the owner and displays information that makes the viewer uncomfortable because of our association with the dangers of exploitation. The items within wallets give sight into the owner’s life, and reveal vulnerable information that feels predatory to observe.
