Tree Hugger March to April 2023 - Sculpture
Crocheted Yarn
Tree Hugger is a term for environmentalists or people that enjoy nature, but is oftentimes used in a derogatory way. I liked the thought of using this piece as a way to reclaim this term and create a positive connotation, allowing people to enjoy nature in an unconventional way. The yarn work has been tightly bound around the tree, where the sweater is hugging the tree. There is a contrast in textures between the roughness of the bark and the plush yarn which can create a sense of comfort, as the yarn is gentle on the skin in comparison to the harsh texture of the tree bark. The ephemerality of this piece was essential, as I did not want it to have an outstanding impact on the environment and it was up for two weeks. This piece was completed close to Earth Day, which allowed it to be viewed in a more positive light as people were celebrating and appreciating nature.
