The alphabet is a systematic approach that we extensively use as a form of visual communication. Introducing the method of modularity to the system already established by the alphabet creates a new level of form where we must view the unique components of each letter while keeping continuity. I took inspiration from the modularity of illuminated manuscripts’ borders, and used their intricate embellishments to create unique forms within a more conventional shape. I used a configuration of rectangles, rhombuses, and triangles to create the primary shapes, and played with swirling lines that vary in line weight to create the inner form. Compiling the modules together to construct each letter creates individual systems that function within a system as a whole.
