My parents had the unique experience of being involved in a cult church during highschool and college. The strict structure of the church established by the pastor was based around judgement, shame, and the importance of devotion, with emphasis on dedicating time and money. Although they valued the sense of community and still maintain some relationships they had formed there, they later realized that those who remained loyal to the church severed ties with them once they left. A significant part of their involvement was performing puppet shows for the church, traveling across states to spread their beliefs. Likening their experience in the church to puppets and the pastor to the puppetmaster displays the limitations that were placed on their self expression and the power that the church and pastor held over them.
